Disability insurance is one of the most overlooked benefits, because most people don’t think they’ll ever be out of work long enough to take advantage of its benefits.
The truth of the matter is, one out of every four working adults will have reason to be out of work for three months or longer.
Think about it this way: You play on the company softball team and you slide into third base. As you cross the plate, you hear a loud pop in your shoulder and, standing up, you realize your arm is hanging from its socket.
You’ve torn a ligament and you need surgery.
If you work in an industry that requires you to use your arm—and most of us do—you likely won’t be able to do your job for six weeks or longer.
You can use some accrued paid time off, but what about the rest of the time? Do you use savings? How do you cover your bills while you’re off of work?
What is Disability Insurance Awareness Month?
It’s not just for catastrophes; it’s for the things that happen when we live our lives: You throw out your back, you have chemo or radiation treatments, you have an accident, or you have a heart attack.
Disability insurance gives you peace of mind so you can focus on getting better and getting back to work.
May is focused on Disability Insurance Awareness Month and we are going to have information here three days a week: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
